Since movies didn't exist in the 1910's, the alternative was things like Plays, or shows. The shows told stories just like movies and books do now. Sometimes shows were humerous, other times, they were really sad or gloomy. Shows were about all different types of things, just like movies are now. Most people went to multiple shows per month. They were the rainy-day entertainment. Nowadays, we go to the movie theater, but back then they went to the regular, old, theater to see a play or special preformance. They still did things outside, but for gloomy days there were always plays.
